MOVING PETS – TOP TIPS FROM PET EXPERTS
LEARN HOW TO MOVE YOUR PET THE SAFE AND EASY WAY
Moving pets can be difficult for you and your pets. Because pets cannot be transported on moving vans, you will need to transport them by air or car. These hints on moving pets will help make the move less stressful for you and your pet.
GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR MOVING PETS:
- Call the State Veterinarian or State Department of Animal Husbandry for local requirements and restrictions regarding household pets, as these will vary from state to state. For example, some states limit the number of pets living at one home.
- Make an appointment with your vet just prior to your move and get a copy of all records and vaccinations.
- Ask your vet about using a mild tranquilizer for your pet during the move.
- Before moving pets get ID tags made with your new address and phone number.
- If you are staying at a hotel, call ahead of time and make sure they are pet-friendly.
- Hold food and water for several hours before the move.
MOVING PETS BY CAR:
- If your pet is not used to traveling in a car, take several short trips prior to your move to get them accustomed to car travel.
- Many pets find car travel very distressing and may get sick. Bring along supplies for clean-up: paper towels, wet wipes, small plastic trash bags and air freshener.
- Bring along food, water and a bowl for each, special treats and a favorite toy.
- Take your dog on a long walk prior to the trip.
- Keep smaller pets in a carrier and cover the carrier with a cloth to help keep them calm during the trip.
MOVING PETS BY AIR:
- Contact the airline well in advance of the trip for restrictions and regulations on moving pets.
- If possible, when moving pets by air book a direct flight.
- Fly on weekdays as the flights will be less crowded and there will be more room in the cargo hold.
- Use a carrier that gives your pet some room to move.
- Get your pet used to the carrier before the trip.
- Put something from home in the carrier that will have a familiar scent for your pet.
- Mark the carrier “Live Animal” and include the pet’s name, new address, and the new phone number and a cell phone number so you can be contacted if there are any problems.
- Arrange to have someone meet the plane if you aren’t arriving at the same time.
- When you arrive at your new home, get your pet back to a routine as soon as possible.
