Plan Your Move: Moving & Packing Tips

  • If your move is job-related, keep detailed records of all of your moving expenses. Your employer may require these records and/or they may be tax deductible to you.
  • Avoid injury when lifting heavy items – bend at your knees, keeping your back perpendicular to the ground and lift straight up, using your legs! Have someone help by lifting the other end of bulky or heavy items. Use a dolly for the heaviest items.
  • Plan your packing strategy. Take measurements and pack the heavier items – such as sofas or appliances – at the bottom of the PACK & RIDE container(s). Some long items may be turned on end to save space. Use rope or elastic cord to secure items to the corner tie-downs of the PACK & RIDE container(s).
  • DO NOT pack expensive, fragile or irreplaceable items (family photos, etc.) into your PACK & RIDE container(s). Although the PACK & RIDE container(s) provide a high degree of protection against environmental elements, even the most carefully packed items can be damaged and accidents happen. We strongly recommend that you personally transport items such as heirlooms, photographs, etc., if at all possible.
  • Carefully wrap items in blankets or bubble wrap to protect them against damage from rubbing against your other belongings. Put smaller and fragile items in boxes wrapping the items in newspaper, packing paper, bubble wrap or filling with polystyrene "peanuts". Mark the boxes "FRAGILE".
  • Organize your boxed items by room – clearly marking the boxes in bold, black ink by the name of the room at your new home. The more information you put on the boxes, the easier it will be to unload.
  • Pack items into the PACK & RIDE container(s) as tightly as possible, filling voids with cardboard, blankets or bubble wrap in order to reduce rubbing, grinding and puncture during transport.
  • Once the PACK & RIDE container(s) are packed to your satisfaction, padlock them to protect your items.
  • When unloading, make sure everyone knows which rooms are designated for what purpose so that they know where to place the boxes and items. If possible, post signs on the door of each room identifying it to match the labeling on the boxes.
  • When the PACK & RIDE container(s) are empty, sweep them out, and wipe away dust or grime. After they have been cleaned, collapse them and keep them secure until their scheduled pick up time. We will be out to get them as we have previously scheduled.
